Mentor Program FAQs PDF Print E-mail

How do I get involved?

Interested members should apply to the program by submitting the mentor program application to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The application can be found on the Society’s website at www.dchealthpolicy.org.

Can I choose my mentor?

No. Based on how you fill out your application form, you be paired by the Professional Development Committee with a mentor that matches your interests.

When will I be paired with a mentor?

The Professional Development Committee meets monthly to match applicants with a mentor. We try our best to pair an applicant in about a month after receiving their application. We do our best to match individuals with similar interests and experiences, based on the available pool of mentors.

What happens if there is not a mentor for me?

Members must understand matches are based on the available pool of mentors, and although a match may not seem “perfect” at first glance, our mentors possess years of previous experience that will benefit any student pursuing a career in health policy.

After being paired with a mentor, when should I contact them?

The Professional Development Committee will announce your match to you and your mentor simultaneously. You should contact your mentor as soon as possible. Begin by introducing yourself and thanking them for taking interest in this important professional development opportunity. Identify the best time for the two of you to meet face-to-face.

How often shall I meet with my mentor?

The Professional Development Committee suggests you and your mentor set the parameters to determine how to proceed by developing plans, modes of communication, and frequency of meetings.

What are my responsibilities as a mentee?

Members are encouraged to adhere to the following goals/responsibilities of the mentoring program:

  • By signing up to participate in the Mentoring Program, you have committed yourself to remain a positive, productive, contributing member of this program. If you cannot fulfill your obligations, you should contact your mentor and the Professional Development Committee to formally withdraw.
  • Establish your goals. After your first meeting, you and your mentor should determine how to proceed by developing plans, modes of communication, and assigning light responsibilities.
  • Communicate your personal goals. Establish reasonable expectations and define your professional objectives with your mentor. Mentors can often provide creative solutions, suggestions, or leads.
  • Maintain contact with your mentor. Professionals have volunteered because they have a genuine interest in your progress and professional well being. It would be disrespectful and professionally detrimental if you choose not to follow through on phone calls, emails, or other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Apply what is learned. Put patterns of professional behavior into practice and learn to accept constructive criticism and incorporate their advice. Practice new behaviors or skills, and take full advantage of any assistance offered.
  • Acknowledge professional performance within the mentor program will reflect on your future success. Mentors often serve as professional references and may also recommend you to their colleagues if they are impressed by your professional experience and growth.
  • Recognize the profound differences that exist between professional and personal relationships. Always be professional.
  • Bring any issues/concerns to your mentor.
  • Share experiences and ask for help.
  • Be patient and respectful with your requests.
